Catalog Description: Designed for students who need to improve their language skills, this course offers a review of grammar rules, language usage, sentence structure, and punctuation, and composition of effective paragraphs and short essays.

EXIT COURSE POLICIES

According to Florida state statutes and to the Department of Education, students taking exit courses must pass the coursework, as determined by the instructor, and the Florida Basic Skills Exit Test, which will be given during the final exam time. Below are the policies for these courses:

    1.  Grades given in Exit Courses: A, B, C, N, F, or I (for incomplete) (+ grades may also be given)

    2.  Students must pass the course and the exit exam in order to move on to the next level course.

    3.  If a student is not passing the course at the end of the term, s/he will not be allowed to sit for the exit exam during the final exam period. Whether or not a student is passing, and thus eligible for the exit test, will be determined by the grade evaluation as stated on the instructor's section syllabus.

    4.  If a student fails to pass the exam on the first attempt, s/he will be given an opportunity for a re-take of the exit exam.

    5.  Students will NOT be allowed to use a calculator on the prep algebra exit exam and will NOT be allowed to use a dictionary or other resource materials on the prep reading and prep writing exit exam.

Major Learning Outcomes:

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of standard grammar and various sentence structures. Students will demonstrate the ability to organize and develop effective paragraphs and short essays.

Specific Performance Objectives:  Students will demonstrate on quizzes/tests and in written work, a knowledge of standard grammar, spelling, usage, and mechanics. Students will be able to:

  1. Avoid fragments and run-ons
  2. Make subjects and verbs agree
  3. Use correct verb forms
  4. Use correct pronouns (case, agreement, and reference)
  5. Use correct capitalization, commas, semicolons, apostrophes, and quotation marks
  6. Write sentences with effective modifying words and phrases
  7. Correctly use standard expressions and confusing words
  8. Write at least 8 graded paragraphs or short essays with 300 or more words, at least half of which should be written in class in 50 minutes or less.

  Methods of Evaluation:

  1. Students will write a minimum of eight graded paragraphs or short essays.
  2. Students will write at least one three-to-five paragraph essay.
  3. Students will demonstrate mastery of grammar and mechanics in writing and on tests.
  4. Students will pass both parts of the Florida Exit Test for Writing with a 70 or above.

Flexibility:

It is the intention of the instructor to accomplish the objectives specified in the course syllabus. However, circumstances may arise which prohibit the fulfilling of this endeavor. Therefore, this syllabus is subject to change. When possible, students will be notified of any change in advance of its occurrence.

Note:

For students with a disability that falls under the American Disability Act, it is the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor and Disabled Student Services to discuss any special needs or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements of this course.
