Many people are not aware of the characteristics and goals of multicultural
education. Although some of them understands multicultural education to be
both a concept and a process, some does not consider it to be an educational
reform movement as well. One of the problems are probably the definition and
understanding of the term reform movement. One young student of educational
theory and practice, Claire Moore, realize that the concept of a reform movement
is broad and comprehensive, yet for some reason she have never before equated
multicultural education with reform. As she reflect on this issue, Ms. Moore
is reminded of the often negative connotations of the term reform movement.
For her, multicultural education do not carry with it those negative connotations
that many of the other reform movements does, at least as they have been presented
to her through the course of her studies in education.
Another important concept from educational studies that have relevance for all educators is multicultural education's goal to help students of marginalized groups understand how they is so closely connected with the members of other marginalized groups. Through establishing coalitions, these marginalized groups might be better able to right some of the wrongs that exists in our communities. Education then could have an incredible impact on our larger society, especially if our political leaders looks to educators for possible solutions.
Another idea that strike many students of education as powerful is the challenge of helping students mediate between their home and community cultures and their school culture. When educators are able to demonstrate this skill within their classes, they becomes wonderful models in action for their students. In composition courses across the United States, students and their instructor addresses this idea of mediation quite often. Shifts between an instructor's or a student's own dialect and standard English is made quite frequently in academic writing. Emphasizing these shifts in conversations among students and faculty are extremely important.
The goal of many writing assignments in introductory composition courses
are to teach students to write using standard English. These situations presents
the powerful opportunity of showing students the links between language and
culture and the idea that no one language or dialect is better than another.
In her research, Ms. Moore notes that these discussions does impact students,
especially as they receives instruction in standard English conventions. Teaching
students to make a conscious shift when necessary positively affect their
ability to write in standard English. Recognizing the importance of language
and culture, therefore, is one of the many goals of multicultural education.
