Catalog Description:  A reading course required for students reading just below the college level.
Description: This course provides instruction in vocabulary skills, listening skills, and comprehension skills.

• Langan, John. Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills. 3rd ed. Townsend Press. 1999

• Nist & Mohr. Improving Vocabulary Skills. 3rd ed. Townsend Press. 2002.

Supplemental Materials:

Additional materials may be assigned by an instructor to supplement the required materials.

 

Special Requirements:

 

Appropriate scores on Florida Entry-Level Placement Exam or REA0001C.

 

EXIT COURSE POLICIES:

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

According to Florida state statues and to the Department of Education, students taking exit courses must pass the course work, as determined by the instructor, and the Florida Basic Skills Exit Test, which will be given during the final exam time.

Below are the policies for these courses:

1. Grades Given in Exit Courses: A, B., C, N, F, or I (for incomplete) (+ grades may also be given).

2. You must pass the course and the exit exam in order to move on to the next level course.

3. If a student is not passing the course at the end of the term, he/she will not be allowed to sit for the exit exam during the final exam period. Whether or not a student is passing will be determined by the grade evaluation as stated on the instructor's section syllabus.

4. If you fail to pass the exam on the first attempt, you will be given an opportunity for a re-take of the exit exam.

5. You will NOT be allowed to use a calculator on the prep algebra exit exam. You will NOT be allowed to use a dictionary or other resource materials on the prep reading and prep writing exit exam.

Specific Performance Objectives:

 

 

 

 

 

1. To develop each reader's understanding of his own reading ability

2. To enable students to grow in their ability to think and react to written and oral materials.

3. To teach students the range of specific reading skills.

4. To develop a broader vocabulary.

5. To increase student's fluency and speed of comprehension in reading.

6. To provide students the opportunity for strengthening their specific reading weaknesses.

Methods of Evaluation:

 

Student will achieve mastery of reading comprehension and vocabulary skills as evidenced by mastery tests and passing the Florida Exit Test for Reading with a score of 70 or above.
